Expeditions

Mark has been leading expeditions to the high Arctic and the deserts of Arabia for more than forty years. The synergies between both environments are great; the people of the north, and the people of the sands live on the very edge of human tolerance. As desert explorer Wilfred Thesiger wrote, the harder the life, the finer the man, and that is reflected in the warmth and hospitality shared by both communities.

A selection of Marks more recent expeditions are below;

Crossing the Empty Quarter Expedition

In 1932, little known explorer Bertram Thomas, advisor to Sultan Taimour of Oman became the first European to cross the largest sand desert on Earth-the Empty Quarter, or Rub Al Khali. 85 years later, Mark Evans with two Omani companions retraced the original crossing from Salalah in Oman to Doha in Qatar, a journey of 49 days on foot and by camel.

Crossing the Empty Quarter is a large format celebration of the journey in all its aspects. Combining extensive photography – both archive and contemporary – with an authoritative yet highly readable text, this book is a unique exploration of the region as it was more than eighty years ago, and as it stands today.
